Bethesda Announces That Fallout 4 Creation Club is Now Live

Back in this year's E3, we were first introduced, rather briefly, to Bethesda's Creation Club. Basically, the Creation Club is Bethesda, teaming up with modders to get them to create mods that will be original and will all compatible with the game because all of them will go under quality assurance testing. You can see the mods they have in store for us here.

Today, the gaming giant has announced that the Creation Club is now live on Fallout 4. Next month will be for Skyrim Special Edition. All Creation Club content is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

There has been wide speculation that this system will be the beginning of paid modding. This caused much controversy in the gaming community as there are fans who are arguing that this breaks the spirit of modding because people are doing it for the love of the game and that it is not fair for people to continue paying for a game they have already paid for.

While, on the other hand, others say that making mods, especially good quality ones, is no easy task and content creators should be compensated for their hard work, plus an incentivized mode of mod creation can attract more talent and thus can pave the way to better mods.

Whether you are for or against paid modding, what we find confusing is this - a Community Administrator from Bethesda clarified that the Creation Club is not paid mods. In a comment he or she said this:

Is Creation Club paid mods?

No. Mods will remain a free and open system where anyone can create and share what they’d like. Also, we won’t allow any existing mods to be retrofitted into Creation Club, it must all be original content. Most of the Creation Club content is created internally, some with external partners who have worked on our games, and some by external Creators. All the content is approved, curated, and taken through the full internal dev cycle; including localization, polishing, and testing. This also guarantees that all content works together. We’ve looked at many ways to do “paid mods”, and the problems outweigh the benefits. We’ve encountered many of those issues before. But, there’s a constant demand from our fans to add more official high-quality content to our games, and while we are able to create a lot of it, we think many in our community have the talent to work directly with us and create some amazing new things.

Okay, so that's all well and good. However, upon closer inspection, we get screenshots from the community saying that the showcased mods themselves have price tags on them, take for instance this screenshot from user korodic:

What do you think guys? What could this mean? Bethesda saying that the Creation Club is for free but we see price tags on the content? Are we missing out on something here? And what do you think about having to pay for mods, are you for or against it? Let us know in the comments below.
